The article "Static Digital Modelling of Stratified Geological Objects: Technological Applications" by O. Lobasov and L. Bosevska has been published in European Geologist magazine (Issue 59, 2025).

Researchers from the Ukrainian Association of Geologists and the Ukrainian Salt Research Institute have presented a mathematical method for constructing digital structural-lithological models of layered geological objects. The approach uses non-stationary first-order Markov chains to model lithological sequences based on well data and generate continuous spatial models of sedimentary formations.

The method addresses the challenges of modelling sedimentary formations with complex and variable layering, where individual lithological layers cannot be directly traced between wells. By analysing lithological transitions in well sections and interpolating transition probabilities across the study area, the technology can synthesise the most probable lithological section at any point within the modelled geological object. This makes it possible to predict lithological characteristics, map areas with specified properties and support differentiated resource assessment.

The technology has been tested on several types of sedimentary geological objects, including the Kosmach area of the Rosilna potash deposit, the Dnipro-Donetsk Depression and the northwestern Black Sea shelf.
