EuroGeoSurveys has published a factsheet highlighting the strategic importance of critical raw materials (CRMs) for Europe's green and digital transition and explaining the role of the EU Critical Raw Materials (CRM) Act, which entered into force in May 2024. The publication outlines how CRMs are essential for key technologies, including batteries, renewable energy systems, electronics, aerospace, and defence, while emphasizing the growing challenges posed by increasing demand, supply chain vulnerabilities, and geopolitical risks. The CRM Act establishes ambitious targets for domestic extraction, processing, recycling, and reduced dependence on single external suppliers to strengthen Europe's resource security.
EuroGeoSurveys highlights the crucial role of National Geological Survey Organisations in implementing the Act by providing harmonised geological data, coordinating exploration programmes, and assessing critical raw material potential across Europe.
Through initiatives such as the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU), the organisation is advancing pan-European geological mapping, mineral resource assessments, and sustainable resource management to support evidence-based policymaking and secure long-term access to critical raw materials.
