EuroGeoSurveys has submitted its response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the European Ocean Research and Innovation Strategy, highlighting the importance of marine geological knowledge for the sustainable management of Europe’s seas and coasts. EGS recommends coordinated European initiatives focused on harmonised and interoperable geological knowledge, including high-resolution mapping of the seafloor and subseafloor, marine critical raw materials, marine hazards, geological blue carbon storage and submarine freshwater discharge. The response also calls for stronger interdisciplinary research and an integrated source-to-sea approach, connecting geological and hydrogeological processes across inland, coastal and marine environments.
Building on the achievements of the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) project, EGS highlights the opportunity to develop a permanent space to provide long-term stewardship of geological data and trusted, interoperable services supporting European policy and the sustainable blue economy.
