On March 18, 2026, the Geoheritage Expert Group of EuroGeoSurveys held a webinar titled “Safeguarding Geoheritage: Best Practices from Protected Areas,” bringing together European experts to discuss modern approaches to the protection of geological heritage.

Participants emphasized that geoheritage is a non-renewable resource that requires systematic management, including the identification, assessment, and integration of geological sites into regional development strategies. Particular attention was given to balancing conservation efforts with education and sustainable tourism, especially through the network of UNESCO Global Geoparks, which demonstrate effective models for protecting geological sites while engaging local communities.

The webinar also highlighted practical experience from Slovenia, where protected areas with valuable geoheritage combine significant scientific importance with challenges related to natural processes and human activity.

In conclusion, experts stressed the importance of a comprehensive approach to geoconservation that integrates science, governance, and international cooperation.
