The European Parliament is preparing to vote on recommendations on strengthening transnational water governance, recognising water as a strategic resource essential for environmental, economic, and international security.
The document underscores the need to strengthen international cooperation in the governance of transboundary river basins in response to growing freshwater scarcity, climate change, and increasing competition for water resources.
The proposed measures include integrating water security into the EU's external action, increasing funding for transboundary water management, strengthening water diplomacy, supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and promoting the WEFE (Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems) approach, which advocates the integrated management of water, energy, food systems, and ecosystems.
