The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) has submitted its response to the European Commission’s call for evidence on the targeted revision of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), reaffirming the essential role of geoscientific expertise in achieving Europe’s water policy objectives.
In its response, the Federation highlights the critical importance of groundwater within the hydrological cycle, particularly for drinking water supply, ecosystem stability, and climate resilience. Against a backdrop of climate change, increasing water stress, and competing land uses, EFG emphasises that achieving the Directive’s objectives requires the systematic integration of qualified geoscientific expertise into assessment, monitoring, and decision-making processes. At the same time, EFG identifies several challenges in the current implementation of the WFD.
The Federation calls for the systematic inclusion of certified experts, such as holders of the European Geologist (EurGeol) title, in groundwater assessments and permitting procedures. In addition, it advocates for recognising the geologist profession under Directive 2005/36/EC to support professional mobility, alongside sustained investment in education and continuous professional development. Beyond technical implementation, the revision of the WFD should remain aligned with broader EU priorities, including resource security, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability.
EFG supports a targeted revision of the Directive that maintains a high level of environmental protection while improving clarity, proportionality, and consistency in its implementation. Strengthening the role of qualified geoscientific expertise will be essential to ensuring that Europe’s water policy remains effective, scientifically robust, and fit for future challenges.
