CE-SRM EU Refresher Webinar «Two years’ experience in UNFC after Train-the-Trainer capacity building». 6 May, 2026

The Ukrainian Association of Geologists took part in the ICE-SRM EU Refresher Webinar, ICE-SRM EU Refresher Webinar «Two years’ experience in UNFC after Train-the-Trainer capacity building», which took place online, on 6 May 2026 as part of the Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) initiative. Moderated by ICE-SRM EU, Meta Dobnikar

The GSEU project brings together European geological surveys and partner organisations to develop a shared database and knowledge base on the subsurface, which is essential for the sustainable management of natural resources and for achieving Net Zero targets. The project involves 49 partners from 36 countries.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the two-year experience of applying the *UNFC – United Nations Framework Classification of Resources* following the Train-the-Trainer programme, to exchange practical findings between countries, and to identify further steps towards harmonising national approaches to the classification of reserves and resources with international standards

The opening session was led by representatives from ICE-SRM EU and UNECE. During the first session, ‘Country’s experience’, representatives from Austria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Ukraine, Portugal, Belgium, Greece, Cyprus, Serbia and the Czech Republic shared their experiences. The Ukrainian side was represented by Maria Kurylo, Ukrainian Association of Geologists. The second session presented the key results of national UNFC training courses in Austria, Germany, Hungary and Norway, followed by a discussion and a summary of the findings.

The Ukrainian side outlined its experience in developing and implementing the UNFC between 2024 and 2026, specifically, the update of the 2025 national classification of reserves and resources, the extension of UNFC application to geothermal projects and underground CO₂ storage, training initiatives for universities and the professional community, as well as the use of UNFC approaches for resource assessment in wartime conditions.

Ukraine’s experience in evaluating and classifying projects in the context of EU strategic projects, particularly those involving critical mineral resources, was presented separately.
