The European Federation of Geologists and Seequent, as part of their strategic collaboration, are organising a free online webinar. June 10, 2026

On 10 June 2026, from 14:30 to 15:00 CEST, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and Seequent, as part of their strategic collaboration, are organising a free webinar titled ‘Making Tailings Storage Facilities Safer – The Critical Role of the Geologist’.

Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are high-consequence geotechnical structures whose safety depends fundamentally on sound geological understanding. Geologists play a critical role in defining foundation conditions, material variability, structural controls, and depositional behavior — all of which directly influence stability, seepage, and liquefaction assessments.

This session provides a concise overview of TSFs, highlighting common challenges such as subsurface uncertainty, evolving tailings properties, and the disconnect between geological models and geotechnical analysis. It will demonstrate how integrated digital workflows — linking subsurface data, 3D geological modeling, and geotechnical evaluation — strengthen collaboration between geologists and engineers, improve technical defensibility, and support safer, more accountable tailings management.

Speaker: Khaled Zahran is a geotechnical and tailings specialist with global experience in tailings dams, civil infrastructure, and soil improvement projects. He has worked on large-scale tailings storage facilities across North and Latin America and supported complex grouting and ground improvement projects in the UAE.
