The UNESCO Land Subsidence International Initiative (LaSII) enhances the scientific understanding and technical knowledge required to identify and characterize hazards related to natural and anthropogenic land-level lowering.
LaSII promotes and facilitates the international exchange of information regarding the design, implementation and evaluation of risk assessments and mitigation measures, and the definition of resource-management strategies that support sustainable development in areas vulnerable to land-level lowering.
The aims of the workshop are
- disseminating the state-of-the-art of scientific advances regarding understanding the drivers of land subsidence, monitoring subsidence and modelling its processes,
- sharing knowledge on data availability,
- establishing a broad network among European land subsidence experts and delegates of the EGS-network,
- improving the transition of state-of-the-art knowledge on land subsidence into management and planning tools, services and regulations.
The workshop is being held in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme and 60 years of water sciences at UNESCO.
