The Code of Conduct of the UAG

Approved on November 15, 2017, at the extraordinary Conference of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists.

 

Members/participants of the Organization met the highest standards of personal integrity and professional behaviour. In the framework of the implementation of ethical values of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists, the relevant rules and principles for each member/participant activity of the UAG are approved.

Compliance with the rules of conduct is mandatory and violation of any of them will be the basis for disciplinary measures by the Ukrainian Association of Geologists. Disciplinary measures may be conducted in the form of a personal warning, public admonition, suspension or termination of membership.

The Code of Conduct is applied to all professional actions of members/participants, wherever and whenever such actions occur.

The Ukrainian Association of Geologists seeks to establish a Code of Ethical Conduct for professional geologists to assure/convince employers and customers of the integrity of each member/participant of the UAG.

General principles/General liabilities

  1. Geology is a profession, and the privilege of professional practice requires professional morality and professional responsibility.
  2. Honesty, decency, loyalty, fairness, impartiality and transparency are the basis for the activities of each member/participant of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists.
  3. Each member/participant of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists, in life and work, is guided by high standards of business ethics, personal honour and decency and professional behaviour.
  4. The term member/participant used in this Code includes all types of membership.

Liabilities to the community

  1. Members/participants in the Ukrainian Association of Geologists must avoid false, misleading or unwarranted statements, representations or claims of professional matters and must not make false or dishonest advertising. The member/participant shall avoid sensational, exaggerated or unjustified statements that could mislead or deceive members of the community or any public authority.
  2. Members/participants of th Ukrainian Association of Geologists should not give permission to manifest, publish or use their reports or maps for any illegal/illegitimate or dangerous/questionable activities or to unreliable sources.
  3. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should not indulge in professional conclusions, preparing reports and providing legal evidence without being informed at the appropriate level.
  4. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists must take care of the health, safety and well-being of the population during their professional activities.
  5. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are required to comply with and accomplish all applicable laws, codes and regulations.
  6. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists shall neither offer nor make any illegal payments, gifts or other valuable remuneration to a public official in order to influence the decisions of such official nor accept any payments, gifts or other valuable means that could influence a decision made on behalf of the community by a member/participant.
  7. Members/participants are required to be accurate, truthful and transparent in all communications with the community.
  8. Members/participants should promote public awareness on the impact of geology and geological processes on the quality of life of the community and society as a whole.

Liabilities of members/participants to employers and customers

  1. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are required to disclose to potential employers or customers the presence of any disputable, competing or conflict situations.
  2. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should not use or disclose confidential information of any employer or customer without their permission and should avoid conflicts of interest that may arise due to information obtained during geological surveys.
  3. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should have zero tolerance to any manifestations of corruption in the ranks of the UAG.
  4. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are required to have a transparent relationship with employers and customers.
  5. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should not be guided by double standards in their work and decision-making.
  6. In the event that members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists believe that the obligations to the employer or client contradict professional or ethical standards, they must correct such liabilities or waive such unacceptable conditions.

Liabilities to colleagues

  1. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should respect the rights, interests and achievements of colleagues, to respect and admit their professional status.
  2. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should not mistakenly or intentionally damage the business and scientific reputation or business activities of others.
  3. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should respect and admit the work done by others, avoid fraud and deception, avoid plagiarism and use of research results without reference to the author and should not use unverified and inaccurate information.
  4. Members/participants should collaborate with other professionals and encourage colleagues to ethically/correctly distribute geological knowledge. Differences of opinions and assertions on the views of others should be based on scientific principles and should be expressed correctly and professionally.
  5. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should be responsible and conscientious about the liabilities undertaken.
  6. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are liable to have a transparent relationship with colleagues.
  7. A respectful and productive work environment is fundamental for maintaining a high level of professionalism, so members/participants should encourage and promote the development of an inclusive workforce in particular. Discrimination or harassment, whether sexual or otherwise, is unacceptable because it violates human dignity and undermines the climate of trust necessary for the work of all geologists. It is unprofessional and unethical to justify any kind of discrimination or harassment or to ignore complaints on harassment by colleagues.
  8. If a member/participant is found to have carried out a discriminatory and/or humiliating action, he/she will be subject to disciplinary punishment, up to the termination of membership.

Liabilities to the association

  1. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should constantly seek to improve the profession of geology, so that it can provide even greater benefits to society and should strive to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.
  2. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists should collaborate with other professionals and contribute to the distribution of geological knowledge.
  3. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are liable to prevent elections to membership of those who are unqualified/incompetent and do not meet the requirements of the standards set out in the Code of Conduct of the UAG.
  4. Application for admission to the UAG or renewal of membership requires adherence to ethical standards set forth in the Code of Conduct of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists.
  5. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists may not use membership to support, recommend or approve specific projects and proposals by the association.
  6. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists are liable to protect the interests of the association and the state in the rational and balanced use of natural resources.
  7. Members/participants of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists must work honestly and in good faith, perform their tasks in a timely and accurate manner, comply with labour and technological discipline and the requirements of regulations on labour protection, take care of the property of the association, perform duties in accordance with the Statute of the UAG and work on improving the standards of geological education, research, training and practice.

Responsibility for standards violation

Members/participants who violate any rules provided by this Code are subject to disciplinary sanctions under the Statute of the Ukrainian Association of Geologists (points 4, points 5).
